A Toyota Quantum was on Thursday (04 Jan) around midday hijacked in Isando. Apparently, the hijackers were traveling in a red Kia with four occupants. Information received pointed to the fact that the driver of the hijacked vehicle was with one of the four accomplices in the Quantum after the hijacking. A quick response by the EMPD Public Policing Task Team members led to the recovery of the hijacked Quantum and the arrest of all four suspects.

The metro police sighted the hijacked Quantum on R24 westbound near the Barbara turnoff followed by a red Kia sedan with three occupants. The POPs Unit members switched on their blue lights and sounded sirens to stop the two vehicles. The two vehicles ignored the metro police and started accelerating in an attempt to get away. A shoot-out ensued and the hijacker in the Quantum was wounded in the upper body after jumping out of the moving Quantum and trying to escape on foot.

Anambulance was summoned for the injured suspect and the case registered at Bedfordview police station. The traumatized victim of the hijacking in the Quantum came out unscathed from the shootout. The other members of POPs Unit pursued the red Kia. The three occupants of the fleeing vehicle abandoned it and tried to evade arrest by fleeing on foot. All three were apprehended at an open veld off Barbara next to the Engen garage. They were detained at Kempton Park police station and the two vehicles taken to the SAPS pound facility at Van Ryn Deep in Benoni.

All the arrested suspects- aged between 24 and 36 - were charged with hijacking of a motor vehicle and attempted murder and were expected to appear in court on Friday (05 Jan).
