The OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games

The 28 October 2017 marked the opening of the OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games which were held at the Germiston Stadium. This was held as part of the centenary celebration of liberation icon, OR Tambo.

These games included teams from Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Sedibeng, Tshwane, Westrand and School Sport and about six (6) sporting activities were made available for young people such as Netball, Football, Rugby, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming.

The MEC Faith Mazibuko who was also the program director at this event said “The OR Tambo Soncini Social Cohesion Games are aimed at contributing towards social cohesion and nation building to help unite the people of Gauteng. She continued to say that it is important to note that these games are not just about fun and play, they offer Capacity building courses in sports administration , sport management, technical officiating, couching and fundraising.

Adding to this information was Mrs Bruna Soncini who came all the way from Italy to attend this event saying this is important to her more than anything else because personally she witnessed the struggles that OR Tambo and Soncini went through for their people fightingsocial injustice. She continued to say these tow (2) icons foresaw this freedom that we now experience.

Also present at this event was the Premier of Gauteng Province MR David Makhura who mentioned the importance of these games for the teams that were present promising to take 200 of these team members to Italy the next year to compete for the Gauteng and South Africa as a whole. The Premier also mentioned that sports speaks to the youth and create hope where the was only disperse.‘We are the home of sport “said the Premier and wishes nothing more than to see these young stars make it in their sports careers.
