Natalspruit Hospital was decommissioned in 2015 by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) and the Department of Health (DoH), citing reasons that the area is dolomitic. This was done hastily without community participation and it left a population of 2.3 million in Thokoza and Katlehong townships denied of their constitutional right to have access to quality affordable healthcare as provided by the state.
In February 2022, the Natalspruit Hospital Concerned Residents’ Committee was established in response to a call by residents from the two affected townships, a call for the reconstruction of their hospital in its original site. This Committee believes:
that the decision by the DID and DoH to decommission the hospital was WRONG and not in the best interest of the Katlehong and Thokoza residents.
that scientific studies and cases have proven that any structure can be built in a dolomitic area
In order to achieve the above, the committee will:
Undertake awareness raising campaigns to highlight the plight of the residents of the two townships.
Make representation to the Department of Health and that of Infrastructure Development for the reconsideration of their decision
Advocate for Natalspruit Academic Hospital with a fully equipped Oncology Department to ensure cancer patients get the best treatment and care
Finally submit petition to the Office of the Premier of Gauteng Government in support of this initiative.
The Campaign Launch has been confirmed as follows: DATE: 25th FEBRUARY 2023; VENUE: D.H.WILLIAM’S HALL, ADMIN SECTION,KATLEHONG; TIME: 14HOO.
