A 40-year-old street hawker was fatally knocked by a taxi

On Wednesday 12 July 2023 at around 17:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Thembisa Precinct Officers, attended to an accident in the Phomolong section of Thembisa area, where a 40-year-old male street hawker was fatally knocked down

Members swiftly responded to the location on Andrew Mapheto Drive near Birchacres Mall. On arrival, the Officers found the 40-year-old male victim, lying motionless on the road. The paramedics were called and certified him dead on the scene. It is alleged that the deceased was a street hawker who sold items at the traffic light, such as steel wool, caps, socks, and chargers of the phones, when he was struck by a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi. The 30-year-old male driver of a minibus taxi, who was alone during the accident, was travelling from Malboro to Kempton Park and sustained no injuries.

The case of culpable homicide was opened at the Rabasotho police station. Although no arrests have been made, the investigations are ongoing.
