Lentswe Sibuyi, a 17-year-old teenager that resides in Sorings and a scholar at Dr. Johan Jurgens High School (better known as JJ) is determined to pass his matric year with flying colours.
He is a top achiever in his grade 12 class of 2021. He is an academic and a hardworking young man who believes education is the future. At school, he is an RCL and he’s part of the school’s executive committee, serving as the Head of Culture.
“I’ve worked hard from a very tender age. My dad has always been strict and he tells me to focus on my books. My determination and hunger for success has also played a role in ensuring that I work hard all my life up until now. I don’t believe in being average, I believe in being great and bettering myself hence I know that being in matric means that I now have an opportunity to transform my life for the better,” added Sibuyi.
He added by saying that Mathematics and Physics are his favourite subjects in his high school career, he has received certificates and distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Orientation and Religious Studies. Sibuyi mentions how he is intrigued by science therefore subjects like Physics and Maths force him to know and understand problem-solving.
The young man reveals certain challenges he goes through as a matriculant. “I study so much. I hardly spend time with my friends so my social life is at stake but I’m okay with that because I know what I want in life. Entertaining friends and being caught up in unnecessary situations will never get me the life I dream for myself. I sometimes study until late especially now that I’m in matric but I try to get enough sleep as well. Although the pandemic may seem to be an obstacle to others, it hasn’t been to me as it helps me push my work even harder,” expressed the young man. Sibuyi states that he is inspired by his teachers as well as his parents and would love to be a medical doctor because he loves working and helping people. He looks forward to applying in tertiary institutions like University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand.
“My advice to upcoming matriculants and other students is that they should put in the work and focus on things that would benefit their future. I see a lot of my peers making poor decisions that get them into trouble. I advise people to have the right friends, work hard because there is no substitute for hard working. Be disciplined, prioritise your sleep, balance your social life, schedule your study time and always execute it,” Sibuyi expressed.
