ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum Slams Education Department’s Ban on School Hawkers and Local Sellers

ActionSA Ekurhuleni Youth Forum has slammed the Department of Basic Education’s decision to ban hawkers and sellers in and around schools. At a meeting in Katlehong South on 14 November 2024, held at DH William Hall, the community expressed anger at this decision, calling it an attack on elderly women who rely on selling goods to make a living, especially given the tough economy.

ActionSA Youth Forum is demanding that the Department of Basic Education reverse its decision and instead focus on shutting down illegal foreign tuck shops in communities. These tuck shops have been linked to recent cases of food poisoning and deaths, and they are seen as taking away business opportunities from South Africans, especially the youth.

The ActionSA Youth Forum is standing up for the rights of South African hawkers who sell near school grounds and is urging the government to support local businesses. They believe that the government should put the needs of its own citizens first and not favour illegal foreign nationals involved in criminal activities.

They are calling on the government to act quickly to address the community’s concerns and protect the rights of South Africans. They demand justice and fairness for all citizens.

ActionSA Youth Forum assures all South Africans that they will keep fighting until the local economy is fully restored to its rightful owners. They stand firm in their belief that spaza shops should be run by locals, and they are committed to making this a reality for their communities.
