Man arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm

A tip off by the members of Etwatwa community about a Somalian businessman who owns an unlicensed firearm was followed up by the EMPD Community Liaison Unit members. The information was given to the metro police on Monday. On Wednesday night (07 Feb), the police raided the shop and the owner was arrested.

For two days running the EMPD CLU members conducted covert investigations which resulted in establishing for certain that the businessman was in fact in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The shop in Etwatwa was raided at 8pm on Wednesday by the EMPD Community Liaison Unit members and SAPS members whereupon the shop owner was found with an unlicensed revolver - a .38 Special Rossi - loaded with seven live rounds.

The arrested Somali businessman who is in his 30s was detained at Etwatwa police station on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrate's Court soon.
