Benoni flying squad nabs two copper thieves

Benoni Flying Squad members apprehended two suspects and found suspected stolen copper cable valued at about R60,000.00 on Monday, February 19.

Members stopped a pickup with two people inside at roughly 7:30 as they were patrolling R23/High Road in Kempton Park. Underneath several scrap tin cans in the vehicle, members found four bags of copper cable upon closer scrutiny.

After failing to provide an explanation for the copper, the suspects were taken into custody right away.

After that, the truck driver gave a member R10,000 in cash to get them released, which led to the addition of a bribery charge to his detention.

Lieutenant Colonel Tali Lukhele, the commander of the Benoni Flying Squad, praises the members for their excellent work and for demonstrating to lawbreakers that bribery would not be accepted. The investigation is still ongoing.

The 42- and 47-year-old accused are scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on accusations related to bribery and possession of allegedly stolen property.
