Blistered Feet, Burning Sun: Gauteng-to-Durban for Youth Skills Development Center Walkers Plead for Help on Gruelling Day Seven

The inspiring 600-kilometre charity walk of two Greenfields youths has hit a critical and physically punishing stage, with the duo now appealing for public assistance to help them complete their monumental journey to Durban.

Thokozani Basana and Zama Nobevu, who set off from their township on October 22, 2025, to raise R350,000 for a community youth skills development center, are facing the harsh reality of their 10-day trek. Now on the gruelling seventh day along the N3, the men report that the relentless sun and deteriorating footwear are threatening to slow their progress to a halt.

“The sun is too hot for us,” one of the walkers reported via phone, their voice tinged with exhaustion. “Our shoes are also slowing us down. We are determined, but our bodies are being tested.”
Their plea is direct: they are urging anyone who can assist with items to cool them down, such as water, sports drinks, hats, or sunscreen, as well as sturdy new walking shoes, to come to their aid. The public has been asked to contact their primary benefactor, Monica Colile, directly on 063 481 5396 to coordinate any support.
Despite the physical toll, their spirit remains unbroken. “We are doing this for the children of Greenfields,” said Zama Nobevu.

“Every painful step is for that youth skills development center. We cannot give up now.”
The community project, which has a total goal of R350,000, can begin its first phase with an initial R100,000. The young men’s courageous effort has already captured hearts, thanks in large part to the support of Sir Clifford Mohau in the ward. His team has been instrumental in providing food, organising media coverage, and has arranged for accommodation in Durban and bus tickets for their return to Johannesburg.

Sir Clifford, when contacted, confirmed the challenges. “These young men are heroes, but even heroes need support. Their journey is tougher than anticipated, and we are appealing to the public’s generosity to help protect them from the elements and equip them to finish what they started.”

Their planned route took them from King Mohlala Road in Greenfields to Sky City, onto the Nigel Road (R550) to Heidelberg, and then onto the N3 directly to KwaZulu-Natal. They are now navigating the long, exposed stretches of highway leading into Durban.

As Thokozani and Zama push through the pain barrier, their story has transformed from a simple fundraiser into a powerful testament to human endurance and the profound lengths to which community champions will go for a better future.

How to Support:
The walkers need immediate assistance with:
Sturdy walking shoes
Sun protection (hats, sunscreen, long-sleeved cooling gear)
Hydration (water and electrolyte drinks)
Financial donations to reach their R100,000 initial goal.
For drop-off coordination or assistance, contact Monica Colile at 063 481 5396.
