Bursary Incentives in new B-BBEE Codes need careful consideration

SNewly proposed B-BBEE codes to incentivise companies when they offer bursaries[1] could help alleviate some of the skills shortages experienced in South Africa. In terms of the new proposed codes, companies that offer bursaries could get additional points on the Skills Development Scorecard. In addition, there is an expectation that any bursary spend on the new B-BBEE codes, will be tax deductible.

The new codes plan than 2.5% of a company’s leviable expenditure must be allocate to a bursary scheme. Thus, a company with an annual payroll of R30 million must allocate R 750 000 towards a bursary incentive. Employers must consider how best to implement the bursary incentive in their organisations.
