Cash-In-Transit Robbers Receive Nearly 200 Years in Combined Sentences

By Sbongile Sokela
In a significant win for justice and public safety, a group of cash-in-transit robbers have been handed lengthy prison sentences. This outcome marks a crucial step in the ongoing fight against violent crime and serves as a strong deterrent to those who threaten the security of our communities.
The incident took place on May 17, 2018, when three G4S vehicles departed from the G4S depot in Boksburg, en route to Absa Bank in Spartan to deposit a large sum of money. As the convoy travelled along Atlas Road in Boksburg, it was ambushed by a heavily armed gang wielding fully automatic firearms. The attackers used explosives to forcibly open the armoured vehicles, making off with cash bags and firearms belonging to security personnel.
A swift and coordinated response from law enforcement, including the police, private security firms, and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), led to a dramatic chase. Several suspects were arrested, and stolen money, along with various firearms and ammunition, was recovered. The operation was bolstered by multiple law enforcement units, including the Johannesburg Hawks’ Serious Organized Crime Investigation, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and police dog units.
The convicted criminals, Paul Sibanda (56), Thato Gaopatwe (33), Thabo Ponatshego Molefe (43), Sibusiso Zakhe Khumalo (43), Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe (49), and Thapelo Arnold Nchabeleng (35), faced multiple charges, including armed robbery, attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and causing explosions. Their sentences, ranging from 36 to 40 years imprisonment, reflect the severity of their crimes.
The prosecution meticulously built a strong case, highlighting the sophisticated and violent nature of the robbery. Through dedicated investigative efforts, authorities gathered irrefutable evidence, ensuring that justice was served.
The convicted robbers received the following sentences:
– Paul Sibanda– 36 years
– Thato Gaopatwe -38 years
– Thabo Ponatshego Molefe 40 years
– Sibusiso Zakhe Khumalo – 38 years
– Thapelo Arnold Nchabeleng – 38 years
All sentences will run concurrently with count 1: robbery with aggravating circumstances. The case against Collen Zwelakhe Hadebe has been postponed to 7 March 2025 for trial.
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, commended the outstanding efforts of the investigative and prosecution teams, stating, “Their relentless dedication and meticulous work have ensured that these dangerous criminals are off our streets. Justice has been served, and our communities can feel safer knowing that law enforcement remains committed to protecting the public.”
