Sixteen-year-old Siphesihle Dlamini from Etwatwa East, Daveyton, has blossomed into a star performer, proudly representing the Bacha Ba Dichaba Spelling Bee program at Sibikwa Art Centre. From his early days as a reserved yet determined child, Sihle has embarked on a journey of transformation that has captivated all who know him.
Siphesihle’s talent was first noticed by his Thopodi Primary School teacher, Ms. Masango, who saw the boy’s passion for words. “He always loved reading and learning new words, even from the age of three,” recalls his mother. With this foundation, Sihle joined the Bacha Ba Dichaba Spelling Bee team, where he rose to prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, becoming a champion in the competition. Despite his achievements, Sihle remained modest. “He didn’t get overly excited,” says Dichaba, a mentor in the program. “It was his mother and younger sister who celebrated the most for him.”
In 2023, Sihle’s love for performance and storytelling took him in a new direction. With support from his mother and sponsorship from Mam Janap Biambe, he transitioned from the Spelling Bee team to the Sibikwa Art Centre. There, he earned accolades such as the Best Newcomer certificate in 2023 and the Most Improved Learner award in 2024. “Sihle is quiet and reserved in real life, but put him on stage, and he transforms completely,” says his mother. “Acting reveals a side of him that is truly fascinating.”
Currently a student at Lesiba Secondary School, Sihle is determined to pursue an acting career. “Performing allows me to express myself in ways I never imagined,” he shares. “I see myself becoming one of the best actors in the future, using my love for words to bring stories to life.”
Sihle’s journey from a shy child to a confident performer is a testament to the power of mentorship and community support. His teacher, Ms. Vumile, who taught him during his first year at Sibikwa Art Centre in 2023 and now manages the Soweto Theatre, joins his family, Janap Biemba, and the Bacha Ba Dichaba Team in proudly celebrating his achievements. Sihle remains a shining example of what passion and determination can achieve. With his eyes set on the stage and his heart full of ambition, Siphesihle Dlamini is a name to watch.
