City of ekurhuleni empowers youth to Commemorate Youth Month

The City of Ekurhuleni kick-started the commemoration of Youth Month by hosting
a library creative club workshop at Isaac Mokoena Library in Katlehong on Monday, 10 June.
Young Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners were equipped with different techniques
for applying arts and crafts as learning tools while promoting the culture of reading.
“We have focused on young ECD teachers because they are part of the future that will help inculcate
the foundation of making reading and learning fun while stimulating creative young minds,” said
the City’s spokesman Zweli Dlamini.
Dlamini explains further that the workshop is one of many youth-focused activities to
commemorate Youth Month in honour of the resilience demonstrated by the youth of 1976.
“Our youth month programmes are multi-faceted and cut across different sectors, and are designed
to unlock young people’s potential and alleviate youth unemployment,” said Dlamini.
A programme called Hike4Life is also on the list of month-long activities, and it will create a platform
to discuss the importance of the youth’s overall mental and physical well-being.
The annual Ekurhuleni Youth Month Masterclasses will be held for the youth in the fashion, design,
arts and craft sectors to develop their skills and address poverty and youth unemployment.
A new group of recruits will also enter the world of work through experiential training provided
through the Ekurhuleni Public Employment Programme (EPEP).
Young people making positive change through community work will be honoured at the Youth
Legacy Excellence Awards ceremony.
Additional Youth Month programmes will be communicated closer to the scheduled dates.
