Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Water and Sanitation Cllr Thembi Msane is leading a campaign to get car wash businesses across the city to contribute to a sustainable water use by adopting water-efficient practices.
“The City of Ekurhuleni is committed to zero water demand growth to remain within the water use targets. This objective will be achieved through improved water efficiency, reduced water losses, and promoting sustainable water use,” says MMC Msane.
“Car washes are significant contributors to water consumption, and the city recognises their role in ensuring responsible water use. Through direct engagement, we aim to educate car wash operators on practical measures to conserve water while maintaining high standards of service.
“Water is a precious resource that we must safeguard for current and future generations. By working together with businesses such as car washes, we can significantly reduce unnecessary wastage and ensure sustainable water usage across the city.”
In ensuring car washes thrive in the local economy, the city is assisting operators with connection procedures. Every car wash business is required to apply for a water meter connection through the city’s Finance; and Water and Sanitation departments, available at their nearest Customer Care Centre.
Officials are visiting car washes across Ekurhuleni to ensure proper connections, payment of municipal bills, and alignment with the city’s water policy.
Car washes can play a vital role in saving water by implementing the following strategies:
•Use buckets instead of hoses: Fill buckets rather than running water continuously from a hose;
•Utilise pressure washers as they significantly use less water compared to traditional hoses while providing efficient cleaning results; and
•Adopt waterless car wash solutions that clean vehicles effectively without using large amounts of water.
