The City of Ekurhuleni wishes to reassure residents and customers that key services remain unaffected by the ongoing strike by the members of Municipal Employees and Civil Servants Union (MECSU) in some parts of the region. The city has noted some isolated incidents of obstruction of employees, as well as interference with municipal operations and access to essential public services at Boksburg Roads and Transport depot this morning. The city reminds MECSU and its members that the Labour Court has already granted an interim interdict, which expressly prohibits any obstruction of employees and residents, as well as interference with municipal operations and access to essential public services. Any further action in contravention of this order will amount to contempt of court, and the city will not hesitate to pursue the strongest legal remedies available against the leaders of MECSU. Municipal facilities, including clinics, rates halls, libraries and recreational facilities, are open as normal. Furthermore, our technical response teams remain ready to respond to any service delivery interruption that may occur. The city respects the constitutional right to protest, but reiterates that such rights must be exercised within the framework of the law and court directives. Lawlessness and the vandalism of public property will not be tolerated. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) along with other security agencies such as SAPS, are currently monitoring the situation, and calmness has been restored in all picket sites across the city.
