DRUNK DRIVER ARRESTED AFTER COLLISION

On Sunday 20 November 2022 at about 12h30, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officer arrested a male suspect for driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless and negligent driving.

The EMPD officers received information that an accident occurred at Springs on the corner of Stoffberg Road and Pansy Avenue, within the Welgedacht vicinity. The officers proceeded to the scene of the accident and on arrival, they found a white BMW motorcycle and a maroon Toyota sedan had collided. The 34-year-old male driver of the motorcycle was an EMPD officer in full uniform, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to the nearest hospital.

During statement taking, the driver of the sedan had slurred speech and bloodshot red eyes. This behaviour gave officers reasonable grounds to believe that driver was under the influence of an intoxicating substance. A breathalyser test was conducted and revealed that he was over the legal limit. The driver was taken to the hospital to have his blood drawn.

The 47-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with driving recklessly and negligently in a motor vehicle, on a public road, while under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

The suspect was detained at the Springs police station and will appear at the Springs Magistrate Court soon.
