Siyabonga Nkosi from Vosloorus, a proud Muslim from Masjie church, has been an active member of the church since 2019. He used to visit between the church and the Zion church, and he found his sense of belonging in a Muslim church. His grandmother, whom he stays with, fought him because they grew up in a Zion church, and was expecting him to continue carrying the same belief, but Siyabonga stuck with his decision until his grandmother left him be.
“What I loved about Muslim church is their teachings. And full time I’m at church because I believe it preserves me from doing the bad things that young people do.”
Their God is Allah – the one they pray to and worship, and their bible, the Koran, leads them to living a life that Allah wants, with the help of learning about their prophet Mohammad – which they imitate in everything he does – from the way he dresses, the things they do to the food they eat. They call all these actions Sunnah.
They don’t believe on Easter holidays, for them those holidays are just normal days; there’s absolutely nothing special about them. They have what is called Ibjima, their gathering day which happens on the 27, 28 and 29 April. On the day, people of different places, with different expertise come and give them lecturers.
“I love their lecturers because they teach me how I should live, and the manners I need to possess. It teaches me respect and how I should treat people,” he said.
He believes anyone without a belief system is like a headless chicken, with no direction, and he wonders how such people live.
One of the things they believe in is fasting, which are separated into ten days – which are for Allah to forgive them of their transgressions. They pray five times a day during their fasting days.
They believe the full moon signifies a new dawn, a new season.
