Ekurhuleni Promotes Agriculture and Career Development at Primrose Technical high

Today on 23/08/2024, the City of Ekurhuleni hosted a career exhibition at Primrose Technical High School as part of the City Manager’s Legacy Project. This initiative is aimed at sharing valuable information about various career opportunities and highlighting successful female role models and their career paths.

The exhibition wasn’t just about careers but also emphasized the importance of self-sufficiency. The young ladies at the school were taught the benefits of growing their own vegetables, with a special focus on the Agricultural Science subject offered at the school.

Acting City Manager Thokozani Maseko, standing in for Dr. Imogen Mashazi, Ekurhuleni’s first female City Manager, emphasized the importance of education. He encouraged students taking Agricultural Science to take it seriously, describing it as a powerful tool in the fight against hunger and food shortages.

A passionate gardener himself, Maseko, alongside Nonhlanhla Mollo from the City’s Economic Development Department, led a practical session on planting. The learners eagerly got their hands dirty, planting seedlings of lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, spinach, and onions.

Mollo further explained the City’s commitment to agriculture through its Fetsa Tlala program, which aims to establish community gardens. This initiative not only provides fresh produce but also strengthens community ties and promotes self-reliance.

The event was a reminder that education goes beyond the classroom, equipping young people with the skills to thrive in various aspects of life.
