EKURHULENI RESPONDS TO COMPLAINTS ON BURRANDAL DAM POLLUTION

The City has launched an investigation into the cause of the water pollution in the Burrandal Dam and will put corrective measures in place once the cause of the problem has been established. MMC for Water and Sanitation Cllr Thembi Msane yesterday led a team of officials on a site visit to the dam after the city received numerous complaints about the condition of the dam.
Cllr Msane emphasised the importance of responsible handling of wastewater and collective responsibility of protecting the environment.
“The city is fortunate to be endowed with so many water bodies and as an environmentally friendly institution we are committed to ensuring that these natural resources are protected. We therefore take the issue of pollution very seriously we are determined to find the root cause of the situation and immediately put corrective measures in place,” she said, adding that the pollution at the dam is rather ‘unfortunate’..
“It must be emphasised that we cannot win this battle without the involvement of various role-players including companies and the general citizenry of our city. We therefore call on everyone to play their part in the protection of the environment especially now that the whole world is faced with the issue of global warming.”
Department of Environment speedily look into the matter and ensure that the situation is corrected as a matter of urgency, especially because the city wants to establish itself as a region as a water sport hub.
The City of Ekurhuleni urges all businesses in the area to adhere to environmental regulations and contribute to the preservation of our ecosystem.
