Electricity thief faces eight-year prison sentence

The law has caught a thief who messed with the city’s important electricity stuff. Mxolisi Hlatshwayo (29) got eight (8) years in jail on 1 February 2024, from the Vosloorus Magistrates Court for this.

It all went down on 30 June 2022, when city peeps nabbed Hlatshwayo fiddling with cables in a little electricity spot with meters in Klipportjie, Boksburg. One of the meters was already messed with and gone from the place.

When they asked him why he did it, the guy couldn’t explain it properly. So, the city people who caught him in the act reported him to the Dawn Park Police. They charged him with messing with important electricity stuff, and he got busted.

The city says the court’s decision is a big deal, protecting energy money and important stuff.

“This is a big step that tells all those stealing our city stuff that they’ll get caught and sent to jail. Messing with important stuff like this is a big problem for the city. Some people mess with meters, others steal cables and other electric things, leaving people in the dark for days. Sadly, some folks need electricity to stay healthy, and these actions put them in danger,” says city spokesman Zweli Dlamini.

“We also have a big problem with illegal connections, thanks to electricity thieves who know their stuff – risking innocent lives.”

The city asks the public to help fight against thieves stealing city stuff.
