Employee shot at waste depot

The MMC for Environmental Resource and Waste Management Cllr Eunice Matloga has called on law enforcement agencies to work with speed in apprehending the suspect who shot and injured an employee at the Ekurhuleni Waste Depot in Germiston this morning.

The employee who cannot be named for security reasons, was shot in the upper body by an unknown man when he reported for duty at around 07:30.  He was rushed to hospital by fellow colleagues immediately after the incident.

“We thank God that he is alive and pray for his speedy recovery,” said Cllr Matloga during a visit to the scene of the incident.

“The city condemns such heinous acts of crime especially in the workplace. We call upon the police and other security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrator so that he can be subjected to the full might of the law.”

Addressing the workers at the depot, Cllr Matloga encouraged them to continue working hard emphasizing that their contribution to society was ‘critical and huge’.

“Your safety is our main concern and we do not wish to see a situation where you are now scared to report for duty or discharge your responsibilities because of fear. This incident is an eye-opener for us to beef up the security in our facilities to guarantee your safety.

“We further appeal to you to come forward to management when you have personal or work issues so that we can determine the kind assistance we can offer you,” she said.

The City has organized psycho-social support for the rest of the workers.

The incident had a slight impact on both litter picking and round collections services.
