Empowering Futures: Bacha Ba Dichaba’s Botswana Experience and Vision for Growth

By Sbongile Sokela

From March 28 to 30, 2025, Bacha Ba Dichaba Explorers embarked on a successful educational journey to Botswana, marking yet another milestone in the organization’s commitment to empowering young learners. A total of 58 learners participated in the trip—24 from Bacha Ba Dichaba, 24 from Kingsley Spelling Bee, and 10 from Thandeka Knowledge Hub. Although Bacha Ba Dichaba did not reach the champion round, six of its learners proudly secured spots in the top six, reflecting the impact of cross-border educational exposure.

Bacha Ba Dichaba extended their sincere appreciation to the 100% Foundation for their generous support in covering all expenses for the program. The organization also acknowledged the 2022 Lesotho champion learners who joined the trip once again, as well as the teachers from Thopodi Primary School and Nigel Secondary School who played a critical role in supporting the team.

Their CEO noted, “We’re thrilled to have first-time travellers join our team, including two teachers, Lerato Mathibe and Tebogo Mhlanga, and one learner, Sandisile Magubane. We hope to retain them for our future endeavours.”

The trip was made possible through partnerships with Kingsley Spelling Bee, based in Limpopo, and Thandeka Knowledge Hub, located in the West Rand. Bacha Ba Dichaba acknowledged the experience as an enriching opportunity for learners to connect, learn, and grow together.

Bacha Ba Dichaba Explorers is a South African organization focused on empowering youth through education, life skills, and community development. Their work is rooted in the mission to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

Through literacy programs and spelling bee competitions, the organization promotes academic excellence and a passion for learning. In addition, their life skills development programs support essential capabilities such as communication, problem-solving, and leadership. The organization also drives community engagement through food distribution and women’s empowerment programs.

Their future goals includes expanding into new provinces like Gauteng, with new branches in Finetown and Orange Farm. They will continue to host key events such as the National Indigenous Languages Spelling Bee Competition and the African Spelling Bee Competition finals.

The organization also plans to continue offering educational support, career development programs, and initiatives that address social issues, including food insecurity. Upcoming highlights include the 2025 Spelling Bee Competition registration, participation in the Winter Boot Camp Literacy, the launch of their organization magazine, Qwaqwa Holidays Literacy Programs Camp, and leadership and financial management training for NPOs.

Donors and partners remain vital to the success of Bacha Ba Dichaba. The organization emphasized, “We urge other donors to consider supporting our organization, a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), which enables us to provide companies with an 18A tax certificate.”
