From patient to advocate: unpacking kidney champion’s journey

World Kidney Day is a big deal worldwide, happening every year to remind us how important our kidneys are. This year, on March 14, we’re all about “Kidney Health for All.” The aim is to spread the word about kidney diseases and what causes them. It’s a chance for folks dealing with these issues to speak up and bust any myths or misunderstandings.

In South Africa, more and more people are getting diagnosed with chronic kidney problems, needing treatments like transplants or dialysis. But there’s a shortage of resources, and many can’t get the help they need from the government. Those who can afford it go private, leaving a lot of poor folks in a tough spot.

Sizwe Lungelo Hadebe is one of the lucky ones. He’s been through the wringer with kidney issues but managed to get help. Now he’s sharing his story to raise awareness and show what it’s like for those living with this disease. He’s all about prevention, especially for folks who might not have much.

Sizwe Lungelo didn’t see it coming – his kidney trouble started because of diabetes. For three years, he battled through all the changes and challenges that came with it. With support from loved ones, he fought to keep his head above water and come out stronger.

His journey inspired him to help others facing big changes. Now, as a Change Management Consultant, he uses his experiences to guide individuals and organizations through tough times. He’s on a mission to make sure nobody gets left behind, especially those in rural areas who might not have access to the right info.

By sharing knowledge and working together, we can fight kidney disease and save lives. It’s up to all of us to make sure everyone has the support they need.
