From Villa Liza Streets to the Mic: Lindelani Ndlovu and the Roar of “Woooza Mntanami!”

By: Ncamiso Dlamini

Imagine the heat rising off the dusty pitch in Villa Liza. Players dart, the crowd roars, and cutting through the noise comes a powerful, passionate cry: “WOOOZA MNTANAMI!”. This is the sound of Lindelani Ndlovu, better known as Maguzu, a young football commentator whose voice is becoming the heartbeat of local soccer in Ekurhuleni.

Originally from Nqutu in KwaZulu Natal, Lindelani found his home and his calling in the vibrant streets of Villa Liza. Growing up there shaped him, teaching him lessons that fuel his journey today. His love for football commentary started unexpectedly back in 2008. While soaking up the atmosphere at countless Kasi tournaments, he found himself captivated not just by the game, but by the energy of the commentator “Skhokho”. Even during street games with friends, young Lindelani would practice his commentary, never imagining it could one day be his path.

That path began to take shape in 2021 during his Matric year. His first big break came when he was called to commentate at the 1459 Community Games. That experience wasn’t just a job; it was the moment he truly fell in love with the art of commentary itself.

Inspired by the legendary Zulu flair of Supersport’s Reggie Ndlovu (Mapensela), and drawing from styles like Phumlani Miya and Baba Zama Masondo, Lindelani worked hard to find his unique sound. Out of this effort was born his now famous call: “WOOOZA MNTANAMI!” This signature phrase means so much to him that it’s become his brand, proudly displayed on t-shirts and caps worn by supporters.

For Lindelani, holding the microphone is a serious responsibility, not just a chance to talk. He prepares meticulously days before any match, believing a good commentator must know more about the players and the tournament’s history than anyone else on the field. His goal is to inform the community and use his voice to promote fairness and motivate everyone, players and fans alike.

The journey hasn’t been smooth. Like many young talents from the township, finding regular opportunities has been his biggest challenge. There were moments of doubt, times when quitting seemed easier. But Lindelani chose resilience. Instead of waiting, he actively sought out tournaments, approached organisers, and volunteered his skills just to get his voice heard.

His persistence is starting to pay off. Recognition grew beyond his regular spots in Villa Liza and Windmill Park. A call to commentate in Vosloorus opened doors to bigger stages like the Tiger Brands Winter Games and events hosted by TRITON. Sharing his story on Kasi FM gave his dream a wider audience and led to more chances across different locations.

Lindelani Ndlovu dreams big. His ultimate goal is to become a professional football commentator, entertaining fans across South Africa. He also dreams of improving his family’s life through his passion. Within the next five years, he sees himself firmly on that professional path. But his vision extends far beyond the commentator’s booth. Deeply rooted in his township upbringing, Lindelani wants to be a beacon of hope for young people in places like Villa Liza. He believes strongly in showing that success is possible, not just in football, but in all areas like music, acting, and the wider entertainment industry. He wants to inspire others to chase their own dreams.

His message to South Africa, delivered with the conviction of a commentator, is simple yet powerful: Winning is simply a mindset. It’s not just about talent; it’s about effort. Effort will get you the win even when your talent needs a rest.

He added that, when people hear that electrifying call “WOOOZA MNTANAMI!”, echoing from the fields of Villaliza or Windmill park, Lindelani wants them to feel pure excitement and find the motivation to push towards their own goals.

Lindelani’s story is one of passion found in the dust of local pitches, a unique voice honed through practice and perseverance, and a powerful call “Woooza Mntanami!”, that carries the spirit of Villa Liza and the unwavering belief that with effort, any dream can find its audience. South Africa, listen up. A new voice is rising.
