Gauteng Liquor Board Initiates Random Blitz to Combat Under-Age Drinking

The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) has expressed deep concern over the recurring issue of certain high schools in the province hosting events such as matric dance after parties and “pens-down” gatherings aimed at alleviating exam-related stress.

In a concerted effort to address this matter, the Gauteng Liquor Board wants to make it unequivocally clear that it has neither received nor authorized the sale of alcohol at schools hosting such events, as this would constitute a violation of the law. The Gauteng Liquor Act 2 of 2003 explicitly prohibits the sale and provision of alcohol to individuals under the age of 18 years.

Furthermore, the Act prohibits the sale and supply of alcohol without a valid liquor license or permit. It is also a criminal offense to consume alcohol in or near public facilities and to be intoxicated in any public space, including parks.

The Board also issues a stern warning to organizers of these events, citing multiple reasons to refrain from hosting them. One of these reasons is that the Regulations for Safety Measures at Public Schools designate all public schools as “alcohol-free” zones, thereby prohibiting educators, parents, and learners from possessing or using alcohol during school activities.

Likewise, the Board advises licensees and establishments against hosting such events. Any outlet or licensee found selling, providing, or allowing learners or individuals under the age of 18 years to consume alcohol on their premises will face the revocation of their licenses or permits by the Gauteng Liquor Board.

To prevent the type of chaos that often arises from the irresponsible sale of alcohol to minors, as exemplified by the 2022 Enyobeni Tarven disaster, the Board will adopt a strict zero-tolerance policy. Through blitzes conducted in collaboration with law enforcement partners, liquor inspectors, and designated SAPS liquor officers, stringent action will be taken against those who contravene the provisions of the Gauteng Liquor Act.

To assist the Board in upholding the law, members of the community are encouraged to report any instances of non-compliance. They can do so by sending emails to Liquor.Queries@gauteng.gov.za or by sending text messages via WhatsApp to 082 497 3254 or 060 532 4027. The anonymity of informants will be strictly protected.
