In Gauteng, schools buzzed with lively energy as learners celebrated the start of the 2024 academic year, creating an atmosphere of excitement. Premier Panyaza Lesufi led the Back-to-School campaign, emphasizing the government’s commitment to education and the well-being of young citizens.
The campaign began at Kgatoentle Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa, where Premier Lesufi, Education Minister Angie Motshekga, and MEC Matome Chiloane kicked off the new academic year. Executive Council Members visited schools and Early Childhood Development Centres across the province to ensure thorough preparation for the first day of teaching.
The day went beyond academics, addressing social issues affecting learners. Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana, and MMC Bridget Thusi distributed essential items at Nkumbulo Secondary School, tackling concerns like teenage pregnancy and substance abuse. Simultaneously, School Health Teams conducted health screenings for a comprehensive approach to student well-being.
MEC Mbali Hlophe stressed the importance of education during visits to Qedilizwe Secondary School, Beverly Hills Secondary School, and Mathabiso Day Care Centre, emphasizing that education is the foundation for success.
In the West Rand, MEC Morakane Mosupyoe delivered sports and arts equipment to Diphalane Primary School, while Finance MEC Jacob Mamabolo participated in the Back-to-School Programme at Raphela Secondary School in Orange Farm.
MEC Lebohang Maile assessed progress at the new Mayibuye Primary School in Midrand and announced the conversion of Edward Phatudi Comprehensive School into a School of Specialisation for Maths, Science & ICT.
Finance and e-Government MEC Mzi Khumalo joined the Back-to-School Programme at Ratanda High School, providing uniforms to less privileged learners and emphasizing the importance of education and entrepreneurship.
Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko addressed bullying at Boepakitso Primary School, highlighting parents’ roles in creating conducive environments.
MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela oversaw readiness for the new academic year at Ekurhuleni schools, and Economic Development MEC Tasneem Motara, with the Department of Social Development, provided essential supplies to various schools.
As Gauteng embraced the new school year, law enforcement officials ensured safety, addressing both physical safety and the social environment, influencing learner behaviour, and mobilizing community support for safer schools.
