Gauteng’s Solar Technicians’ Programme gains momentum

In a significant move to address the energy crisis and promote gender equity in the sector, the Gauteng Provincial Government has launched the Solar Technicians’ Programme.

This initiative aims to empower women and provide them with opportunities in the renewable energy industry.

The response to the program has been overwhelming, with a staggering 44 000 applications received for solar technician training.

Notably, an encouraging 57% of these applicants are women, showcasing women’s increasing interest and determination to play a vital role in the energy sector.

The Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA), in partnership with the Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA), will spearhead the training program in the Solar PV industry.

Starting in August, the GCRA will train 6 000 young individuals in the region, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills for Solar PV Research, Installation, and maintenance.

This skills development initiative serves a broader purpose – facilitating a transition from coal-reliant energy sources to solar energy. By doing so, it addresses the current energy crisis and contributes to reducing the nation’s dependency on coal-generated electricity.

The University of Johannesburg will be at the forefront of delivering the training, ensuring that the participants receive comprehensive education and practical experience in the renewable energy sector.

The training will be open to candidates without electrical experience or qualifications, making it an inclusive opportunity for young people from diverse backgrounds.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi expressed his enthusiasm for the program and highlighted its broader societal impact.

Lesufi emphasized that the initiative builds upon the success of the Nasi Ispani Mass Recruitment Program, which has previously provided employment opportunities for thousands of individuals in various sectors, including crime prevention and waste management.

The premier was speaking at Orlando Stadium in Soweto, where thousands collected their appointment letters to be trained as Solar Panel Technicians.

One of the beneficiaries, Nombuso Ndlovu, shared her excitement about receiving the appointment letter for the training.

“Nasi iSpani will reduce unemployment. These jobs will take us out of the wrong activities, and I’m grateful for that.”

As a woman, Nombuso acknowledged the significance of this opportunity for herself and her ability to support and care for her child and family. She encouraged other young women not to hesitate in pursuing careers in traditionally male-dominated industries.

The Solar Technicians’ Programme marks a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and gender-inclusive energy sector in South Africa.

With the government’s commitment to empowering all sectors of society and fostering economic opportunities, the initiative promises to have a lasting positive impact on the lives of many individuals, especially women, and contribute to the nation’s energy transformation.
