The South African government initiated a COVID-19 vaccination phase for citizens who are aged 18-35 years, on August 20, 2021. This immunisation drive was rolled out after the country recorded the most coronavirus infections and deaths on the African continent.
The government has so far only managed to vaccinate less than 8% of its 60 million population. “As part of increasing the vaccination programme, the Cabinet approved the vaccination of persons aged between 18 years and 35 years from 20 August,” the government said on Thursday. A few young people are planning to take the jab but some are not. It has been confirmed that there are currently 10 million vaccines dispensed since the establishment of the vaccination programme. On social media, both men and women between the ages of 18 – 35 years are confirming that they will be going to different health care facilities for the jabs. Meanwhile, some are planning to take a jab when they knock off from work.
Different health care centres are already open to vaccinate the 18 to 35 years group.
