HerWay Magazine Builds a Movement for Women to Thrive on Their Own Terms

By Sbongile Sokela

HerWay Magazine was born out of a deep desire to create space for women who often feel unseen, unheard or underestimated. Founder Kutlwano Mofokeng, a 30-year-old qualified journalist, wanted women in totality to feel comfortable and authentic in their own way.

As a Black woman navigating entrepreneurship, she saw a gap not just in representation, but in real, relatable stories and tools that empower women to thrive. Her vision for HerWay is to be a powerful force that helps women reclaim their voices, pursue their dreams unapologetically and realize they are not alone.

“We’re building more than a magazine, we’re building a movement,” says Kutlwano.

HerWay Magazine challenges the outdated narrative that women need to fit into one box. It showcases women who are multifaceted, leaders, mothers, artists, business owners and everything in between, and celebrates the beauty of living life on your own terms.

“By sharing honest stories, actionable resources and real-life experiences, we aim to redefine success and womanhood in a way that’s inclusive, powerful and authentic,” she adds.

The concept for HerWay began in 2017. Since then, Kutlwano has faced her share of obstacles.

“One of the biggest challenges has been access, to funding, to opportunities and to being taken seriously. As a Black woman, I’ve had to fight for seats at tables that weren’t built with me in mind,” she says. “I’ve learned to create my own table. I leaned on community, remained true to my vision and stayed grounded in purpose, even when things felt impossible. My faith, resilience and a deep belief in the mission behind HerWay kept me going.”

HerWay is a platform that exists for every woman who has ever felt overlooked. It amplifies the stories of Black women, young entrepreneurs, single mothers, survivors, creatives and community builders, women whose strength and softness coexist.

“We plan to spotlight grassroots stories, provide opportunities for collaboration and invite our readers to contribute their own voices. Inclusion isn’t a goal, it’s our foundation,” she explains.

The message behind HerWay is one of empowerment and freedom to evolve.

“You are allowed to grow, dream, change, fail, rise and reinvent yourself, on your own terms. HerWay is a reminder that your story matters, even when it’s still unfolding,” Kutlwano says. “We hope to empower our readers to embrace their full selves, take bold steps and build lives that reflect their worth, not just their circumstances. You don’t have to do it like everyone else. Do it HerWay.”

The magazine also welcomes new contributors and collaborators.

“We’re always excited to collaborate and connect. If you’d like to contribute, sponsor or be featured in HerWay Magazine, you can WhatsApp us at 081 425 2720. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook for updates and opportunities,” she adds.

Her closing words are a powerful reminder to every woman on a journey of purpose:

“Don’t aim to be like me, aim to be fully, beautifully you. But if you’re inspired by this journey, know that it starts with believing in your vision, even when no one else does,” Kutlwano says. “Build slow, stay consistent and trust your voice. There’s no perfect path, just purpose and progress. Be bold, be kind to yourself and never wait for permission to rise.”
