Following gas inhalation during what is believed to be illegal mining activities, 16 individuals were reported deceased on Wednesday night at the Angelo Squatter camp west of Boksburg.
William Ntladi, a spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services, who is on the scene, reports that they received a call shortly after 20h00 about what was initially believed to be a gas explosion. When they arrived, according to Tladi, they discovered that the source of the leak was a gas cylinder from one of the yards inside the informal settlement.
Initial research, according to him, suggests that this may be related to illegal mining in the region.
