The fire that razed the museum and city hall in Lichtenburg last night once again serves as evidence that nothing of value, particularly cultural value, can be entrusted to the care of the ANC government.
Despite years of appeals and warnings from the FF Plus and other stakeholders, these cultural treasures have now been reduced to ashes due to the negligence or spitefulness of the ANC-controlled Ditsobotla Local Municipality.
The fact that private companies had to dispatch their fire engines to the scene because the local authorities’ fire engines arrived without water speaks volumes.
The Ampie Bosman Cultural History Museum showcased exhibits related to the founding of Lichtenburg in 1873, its rich diamond history, General De La Rey, and the siege of Lichtenburg during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902.
Among the artefacts, the ox-wagon that belonged to Gen. De La Rey’s wife, Nonnie, was also part of the exhibit.
This is a disgrace, highlighting the ANC and its supporters’ disregard for the people of South Africa and Lichtenburg.
