The Department officially opened Road P241/1 after completing its rehabilitation work. MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela led the ribbon-cutting ceremony in Lenasia, City of Johannesburg, with various stakeholders present.
Road P241/1, located south of Johannesburg, is one of two main links between Lenasia and the city. The project rehabilitated approximately 13km of pavement to improve mobility on this crucial single-carriageway route.
As a key local route, the road’s rehabilitation aimed to extend its design life to over twenty years. The project focused on enhancing the road surface, subsurface drainage, and creating employment and skills development opportunities in the area.
Despite facing challenges, including community unrest causing delays, the project was successfully completed. MEC Diale-Tlabela urged the community to use proper channels for concerns to avoid costly delays. She noted, “Community unrest caused standing time, impacting job creation and diverting funds from other projects.”
The project, costing around R140 million, generated over eighty employment opportunities during construction. Local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and local labour were actively involved, contributing to skills development and boosting the local economy. The Gauteng Provincial Government’s commitment to improving lives is evident through quality road infrastructure.
The rehabilitation aligns with the Department’s dedication to uplifting the province’s youth, women, and people with disabilities. The successful collaboration between the Department, businesses, and stakeholders showcased how it can enhance mobility and economic activity in the province.
