Fifteen students from Ekurhuleni have graduated with their National Certificates in Professional Cookery, courtesy of a R400 000 sponsorship by Carnival City to prepare them for careers in the hospitality industry.
The year-long course at the International Hotel School brings together elements of food and drinks preparation as well as supervision, and is applicable to all sectors, from small restaurants to large-scale hotels across the tourism industry.
Course facilitator Elizabeth Sigauke said the students, who graduated last month, had been trained to become commis chefs and now knew how to cook, clean, prepare food, serve, dish up and do plate presentation.
“Carnival City’s contribution together with the International Hotel School was to make sure students who did not have any experience in the job at all, walked out with a National Certificate in Professional Cookery,” said Kobus Henning, Learning and Development Specialist at Carnival City Casino. He said the hotel and casino sponsored the course as a way of giving back to the community in which it operated.
“As Carnival City, we believe the youth are our future which is why we are helping these youngsters to develop themselves. Sun International is proud to be the first stepping-stone for them to achieve their dreams.” The next step is to assist the graduates in finding jobs, so “that we can make their dreams come true”.
