The City of Ekurhuleni praises communities for being careful with water during the ongoing heat wave.
“Despite the extreme heat, the city has seen people using water sensibly,” says city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.
This is different from before when water levels dropped a lot because everyone needed more water due to the heat.
The city asks communities to keep saving water. People are encouraged to do things like:
- not using hosepipes to wash cars, but using buckets instead;
- not watering gardens during the day, but choosing early morning or evening;
- sweeping instead of using hosepipes to clean pavements;
- turning off taps while brushing teeth;
- taking quick showers and not filling the bathtub;
- using water again when possible – water from washing clothes, and rinsing fruit and vegetables can be used again for other things.
The City keeps an eye on how much water is in the reservoirs to make sure there’s enough. If there’s not enough water, water trucks will be sent to areas that need them.
