Council declares civic funeral for Cllr Zwelibanzi Gift Ngwenya of ward 79

The council wishes to announce the untimely passing of the ward councillor for ward 79, Cllr Zwelibanzi Gift Ngwenya (ANC). Well known for his outspoken nature, Cllr Ngwenya was an activist from a young age and grew in rank within the African National Congress. Following the 2016 local government elections, he joined the council and served in the Environment and & Waste Management and Transport & Planning Section 79 Oversight Committee.

The African National Congress Caucus expressed earnest condolences to the Ngwenya family and the community he served, “The ANC caucus has lost a true leader. His death cuts deep and has left the organisation in agony, he was a committed cadre and his contribution will be sorely missed”.

The late Cllr Gift Zwelibanzi Gift Ngwenya will receive a civic funeral in line with the council’s funeral policy. The memorial service and funeral proceedings will observe current Disaster Management Act regulations.

The memorial service will be a hybrid sitting held tomorrow, 18 August 2021. Only the family, selected councillors and speakers of the day will attend. The service will be live-streamed on the City of Ekurhuleni social media platforms.

The funeral details will be communicated in due course.
