On Monday 23 January 2023 at about 10:30 members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department First Response Unit (FRU) restored order at Geluksdal Secondary School following violent protests sparked by an alleged racism incident that occurred at the school.
It is alleged that a racist altercation broke out between learners and educators at Geluksdal Secondary School when a learner who had applied to the school was not accepted. The learner approached an organization called Pan African Schools Organization (PASO) regarding the matter. PASO approached the school management by allegedly inciting learners to disrupt classes.
Furthermore, the learners ripped down a wire fence as the protest intensified, however, members of the EMPD arrived at the school and immediately restored order.No injuries have been reported, however, damage to the school fence was reported.
The EMPD applauds the speedy response by members, to prevent further damages and possible injuries in an institution of learning.
