Gauteng MEC must deliver on promise regarding children

The FF Plus will hold the Gauteng MEC for Social Development,  Mbali Hlope, to her promise that all registered children’s homes in the province will receive their subsidies by this Friday.

Hlope made this promise on Monday in reply to a question from the FF Plus during a question-and-answer session in the Gauteng Legislature.

The party wanted to know which children’s homes qualify for grants, and which ones had already received them.

In her reply, Hlope confirmed that there are 155 children’s homes and care centres for children in Gauteng of which 104 are registered.

Out of the 104, 77 had already received their subsidies and the other 27 will, according to her, receive theirs by Friday.

The FF Plus strongly condemned the announcement by the Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, earlier this year that all non-governmental organisations’ subsidies will fall away.

The Gauteng government has a responsibility towards children in need as well as those who care for them.

So, it is vital that these subsidies are paid out as soon as possible.

The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the MEC and her Department to ensure that they deliver on the promise.
