The Gauteng Economic Development MEC, Ms. Tasneem Motara, recently introduced the new board members of the Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB), Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), and Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA). The former board members’ term of office concluded on September 30, 2023, after they began their tenure on October 1, 2020.
In June 2023, the Department initiated the process of appointing new boards for these entities, guided by their respective founding legislation. This process aligns with legislation that requires the MEC to call for nominations in the media and government gazette before appointing new boards. The relevant legislation includes the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller Act No.05 of 2005, the Tourism Act No. 03 of 2014, and the Gauteng Liquor Board Act No.02 of 2003.
The call for nominations was first published on July 19, 2023, in the provincial gazette, with subsequent announcements in The Star and The City Press newspapers. These publications generated significant public interest, resulting in a total of 460 applications across all three public entities. After a thorough assessment, only 174 applications met the minimum requirements and were considered for board positions.
Following the assessment, a list of nominees meeting the requirements was presented to the HOD and MEC for review. The shortlisted candidates underwent a vetting procedure, and the outcomes were presented to the MEC for consultation with the Executive Council (EXCO). After deliberations, EXCO approved the final recommended candidates, ensuring representation from a diverse range of demographics.
MEC Motara emphasized the notable achievement that all three boards are chaired by women. She also underscored the majority female representation across the three boards. The MEC expressed a commitment to attracting more young people to serve on the boards, with current youth and persons with disabilities representation exceeding minimum thresholds.
Addressing the board members, MEC Motara outlined her expectations for each organization:
Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB):
- Maintain the clean audit outcome achieved for the first time.
- Enhance public participation and improve complaints management.
- Implement the liquor automation system as soon as possible, in line with commitments made to Premier Lesufi and the Gauteng EXCO.
