Due to the persistent rainfall that the City of Ekurhuleni has had thus far, local Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains on high alert for possible flooding, drowning and all other life-threatening emergencies following warning of disruptive rain and severe thunderstorms with possible strong damaging winds accompanied by hail and heavy downpours expected in the province of Gauteng as per South African Weather Services (SAWS) focus.
The City of Ekurhuleni DEMS is closely monitoring the water streams, known low-lying bridges, communities on the flood lines and all known areas prone to flooding.
Those residing next to the river streams are cautioned to remain on high alert, even if it doesn’t rain in their areas because it might be raining somewhere, and rivers might be flooded and cause devastating impacts to unsuspecting communities.
Residents with perimeter wall fencing around their properties remain at high risk as well because of the water damming. Escape tunnels should be created at the base of the walls to allow the free flow of water.
Motorists as well need to keep to the minimum speed limit because of poor visibility during rain. Road surface traction is poor, and potholes are also not easily visible. Low-lying bridges and subway bridges are predominately flooded, and are as well, not easily identifiable.
Each and every community member should be extremely cautious at all times as more rain is still expected for more couple of days in the week.
Safety consciousness builds resilient communities, and it is of paramount importance to preserve lives. Safety practices remain an individual`s ultimate responsibility.
