Impacts of Corona Virus on Matriculants

The Corona virus pandemic in the year 2020 has triggered a lot of changes in all aspects of our lives, all over the world.

It has delayed the procedural processes in the education department in both academically spheres, in the secondary level as well as in the tertiary level in South Africa. Matric pupils are very anxious as the marking processes of their Matric examination papers of 2020 began on the 4th of January 2021. This is an unprecedented situation that has caused massive delays becuase some matric learners were expecting to be in varsity this month; however COVID- 19 has prohibited all of that this year.

A learner from Kenneth Masikela Secondary School, Nkosinathi Mahlangu, has mentioned how the academic year of 2020 was not easy for him, stating that: “My matric year was difficult because we lost so many loved ones and accessing the internet to study was not a privilege granted to every learner, but we gave it our best shot. I know I did my best but I am impatient because if it was not for COVID-19 we would know by now where we stand; my family and teachers supported me all the way, the rest was on my hands.”

The matriculants of 2020 will receive their results on the 22nd of February 2021 and primarily Nkosinathi Mahlangu applied for Internal Audit at the University of Johannesburg as his passion is in the field of Accounting. A teacher from Nkosinathi Mahlangu’s school applauded their work as teachers because it was not an easy year for them.
