International Midwives’ Day celebrated

On May 5, Midwives were celebrated for the role they played throughout the years, by taking care of pregnant women. Midwives consider childbirth to be a miracle and something to be cherished.

Over the years midwives have been taking care of pregnant women and assisting them to deliver healthy babies throughout the centuries until hospitals were erected.

Now in the modern era Obstetricians have replaced midwives, however Sheila Stubbs is clear to anyone who gives it half a thought, that women did not always give birth in hospitals, and in fact, they most commonly would give birth in their own homes under the guidance of an experienced woman (Known as a midwife). There were those who specialized in the delivering process and who helped the procedure to happen naturally fruitful, and those women were called Midwives.

“International Midwives’ Day serves to remind us that the female body is perfectly capable of giving birth and carrying a child, without some of the invasive methods employed by Obstetricians and other practitioners. The history of Midwifery goes back to prehistory, as there are records all over the world of midwife traditions.

“These women are those who studied about the birthing process and the vital role it plays in perpetuating the species and its cultural significance. While it’s true in ancient days their practices were based heavily in experience and superstition, today’s midwives are just as capable and competent at taking of pregnant women as the more commonly used OB/GYN’s and Obstetricians,” shared by WHO.
