Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Commerce based in Vosloorus Comprehensive School in Ekurhuleni offers extra support to township learners, assisting them to improve their school performance.
Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Commerce is a non-profit organization (NGO) that was established in 2012 and managed to get 740 learners to the universities and facilitated bursaries for 400 learners. This centre has reaped successful results regardless of its previous challenges. They managed to obtain 97 distinctions in the 2022 matric examinations.
In total, they had 82 matriculants who wrote the 2022 matric examinations. They managed to achieve: Mathematics (26 distinctions), Science (24 distinctions), Life Science (30 distinctions), and Accounting (17 distinctions).
Lusanda Khanyile from Phumulani Secondary School obtained 7 distinctions and one of the Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science and Commerce beneficiaries said, “I joined Karabo in 2019 when l was in Grade 9, and I used to achieve between level 4 and 5 with the assistance of the centre l have managed to improve my levels. I am humbled and grateful to Karabo for changing my life.
I have been accepted at Wits university to study medicine.”Amanda Mlilo from SunWard Park High School obtained 6 distinctions and said, “I joined Karabo in 2021, I used to achieve between level 5 and 6 but now I have managed to get distinctions. With the Center’s assistance, I have been admitted to Wits to complete my studies in Bachelor of Health Sciences”. The centre has been constantly performing well in the past five years producing excellent results and empowering and changing lives for the township children.
According to Collin Forka, the chairman of Karabo Centre for Mathematics, Science, and Commerce, the centre is solely dependent on sponsors, and they have lost many of its funders due to the Covid-19 pandemic they are appealing for funding to sustain their programme.
