Katlehong Table Tennis Club nurtures talent

To raise the Ekurhuleni South flag, the Katlehong table sport was established in 2006 as a school’s table tennis club, then it was later changed to Katlehong table tennis in 2014 to accommodate anyone who may be interested in the sport.

This code is coached by five people Lerato Tsotetsi (Head coach), Rebecca Lukhele (Chairperson of the team), and three Co-Coaches Lerato Moopi, Mamello Phutsisi, and Mamokgethi Dintso.

These coaches realised and understood the uniqueness of this sport and believed that this sport will take Katlehong and their players to higher places.

They have 15 players between the ages of 10 to 15 years of age, it accommodates abled and challenged players. These players are learners from two schools, Morojaneng Primary School and Tshabalala Primary School.

“I was motivated by the fact that table tennis is unique and it will enable me to travel the world, get school sponsorships because sports and education work hand in hand,” said Moopi as she shared her motivation for the sport.

On the other hand, Phutsisi loved the uniqueness of the sport and she said it is a safe sport for her since she was not interested in other sports activities such as netball and soccer.

Chairperson of the team, Lukhele started this code in 2006 with five players, they participated in a provincial game at Vaal and obtained a Bronx Medal. She further mentioned that their target is to see this code being recognised by everyone because it is something that is still not known and unique.

From the year 2014 to 2019 this team achieved a lot both as a team and as individuals. Coach Lerato Tsotesi said, that from 2014-to 2019 majority of their players were representing Gauteng in the Classic Arnold Schwarzenegger tournament in 2016, and a KTT player, Basetsana Moopi obtained a Bronx Medal and she was proud as her coach.

“The Katlehong table tennis team also represented GCTTA (Gauteng Central Table Tennis Association) from 2014 to 2019. In 2019 under 18 girls, we obtained a silver medal and under 18 boys, won a gold medal. As a Katlehong code we obtained School sport Award three years in a row 2016, 2017, and 2018,” she added.

Katlehong table tennis team is situated in Phake Section and training is held on Wednesdays till Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm, on Saturdays 11:30 am to 4 pm. Their motto is nurturing the talent and potential of young people.

The team asked for donations that will assist them with buying equipment such as table, bat, attire, and transport when they travel for their games.
