Long walk to preserve Ndebele music and dance

Ngezika Masangana is a Ndebele traditional music band that specializes in bringing a lively atmosphere to corporate events, conferences, weddings, and other private events.

Driven by a deep love for Ndebele music and dance, Mr Sithole took early retirement from a 30-year service as a Driver to fulfil his dream of becoming a musician in the Ndebele traditional music scene after

countless attempts in the 80s that never materialized.

Research says Ndebele culture, and dress code including its music and dance are at risk of being forgotten as the young are migrating to urban areas in large numbers leaving behind their traditions while adopting

those that dominate the cities.

Together with individuals who have inspiring stories, his brothers who are retirees, Xolani (son)an engineer who never made it to corporate, and teenagers who are well known for entertaining at traditional ceremonies formed Ngezika Masangana.

After all the struggles and disappointments, Ngezika Masangana finally released an album called “Ikhande Lami” with hit tracks like “Tjhagala rodo, Mfumbezi, Unyabela, Yetjhe, and many more. The album is available in all digital platforms and the band is available for bookings.

Their music is a mixture of different tunes blended together to produce unique, enjoyable, and inspiring sounds. Ngezika Masangana dance is knit to a repetitive rhythm initiated by clapping the hands and blowing a whistle and is then taken up by the dancers to express and showcase Ndebele’s cultural behaviour, values, attitudes, and beliefs through different dance styles and gestures.

Xolani Sithole the manager of the group stated that they are calling all interested individuals to partner with or sponsor them to achieve their goals of promoting and educating about different cultural expressions through music, dance, fashion, and events to safeguard their heritage as South Africans and as well address the causes of poverty, unemployment, lack of education and substance abuse in rural areas.
