Executive Mayor Ald. Nkosindiphile Xhakaza officially reopened the Rietfontein landfill site in KwaThema, Springs, on April 23, 2024, after a yearlong closure due to operational issues.
The reopening of the Rietfontein landfill site aims to alleviate waste disposal pressure, complementing the other fully functional landfill sites: Platkop and Simmer and Jack.
As a GLB+ facility, Rietfontein is the sole site accepting general waste and specific liquid waste for treatment and disposal. It handles 20,000 tons of waste monthly, equivalent to 2000 trucks disposing of 10 tons per load.
Executive Mayor Xhakaza stated, “With operational issues resolved and community support secured, the site’s reopening marks a new era of efficient waste management. It highlights the government’s commitment to providing job opportunities for locals.”
He pledged to ensure all landfill sites meet environmental compliance standards.” The health issues faced by the community will no longer be a concern,” stated the Mayor.
Mr. Sokhela, (Induna) from KwaThema hostel, highlighted the community’s joy, particularly among the unemployed, as the site offers income opportunities through waste collection for recycling.
“Waste-related challenges in KwaThema will diminish, making the site a source of livelihood for waste reclaimers,” he added.
