ONE SUSPECT BEHIND BARS FOR POSSESSION OF AN UNLICENSED FIREARM

WINNIE MANDELA_ On Tuesday 27th of September 2022 at about 17h15, the members of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) Task Team, while executing law enforcement and patrol duties, spotted a charcoal Nissan Almera with three (3) male occupants along DM Marokane Drive in Winnie Mandela area and attempted to stop and search the vehicle.

The suspects disregarded the officer’s instructions and accelerated away. A chase ensued until the suspects’ vehicle lost control and was involved in an accident, in Ivory Park. Two suspects managed to crawl out of the wreckage and fled the scene, while the third suspect was apprehended. One 9mm Beretta unlicensed firearm with the serial numbers scratched off and an empty magazine was recovered in the vehicle.

The suspect, aged 25 years old and is an undocumented Zimbabwean national, was detained at Ivory Park police station and charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition, conspiracy to commit crime, possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle, reckless and negligent driving. Further charges under the Migrations Act may also be filed against the suspect.

The suspects will be appearing in Thembisa Magistrate Court soon.
