The City is on course to fulfil its commitment to providing dignified dwellings to all its residents.
Ramaphosa’s informal settlement is turning into one of the model areas for how much re-blocking of informal settlements can improve the lives of its residents and provide a dignified dwelling.
In the last three months, from April to June 2021, the City has spent over R20 million to electrify the settlement, a process that included the installation of prepaid meters and high mast lights. Over 400 dwellings have access to a safe supply of power.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for energy Cllr Tiisetso Nketle pleaded with the community to refrain from vandalising electricity infrastructure and to use electricity sparingly to avoid theft and illegal connections.
Resident in the area Masasa Ngobeni (51) stays with her family and her sickly 87-year-old mother who depends on the oxygen concentrator for survival.
“We have stayed here since 2011, and we haven’t had electricity since then. Things got worse when my mother moved this side from Limpopo to stay with us. She depends on the oxygen concentrator to help her breathe and it requires electricity for it to function. It has been tiresome for me to make means to make sure that her device is well charged. So, we are grateful for this development,” Ngobeni said.
“Work to electrify all 119 informal settlements in the City is ongoing, and we are confident that it will help us to win the war against illegal electricity connections,” said MMC Nketle.
