GTP arrest scores of drivers for violation of road traffic rules

The Gauteng Traffic Police members attached to the Special Patrol Unit and Krugersdorp region arrested eighty-three (83) drivers for violation of road traffic rules and regulations during a law enforcement operation conducted at Malibongwe Drive, Kya Sands on the 17th of March 2022. The Gauteng Traffic Police issued fines to offenders and discontinued nineteen (19) unroadworthy vehicles in the process.

In separate incidents, a total of 62 drunk drivers were arrested for driving under an influence of alcohol during drunk driving operations held yesterday along the M2 Freeway, Rabie Ridge, Pretoria Central at WF Nkomo street, Western corridor, along the R28 and R550 road to mention a few. The highest drunk driver was arrested at Rabie Ridge after the breathalyzer reading was recorded at 1,36 mg/1000 ml.

Amongst some of the arrested was a male driver who was caught on the N1 driving a Jeep 4 x 4 at an excess speed of 176 km/h on a prescribed maximum limit of 120 km/h zone. The speedster was detained at Lyttleton police station and expected to appear at Pretoria Magistrates court on Tuesday, 22nd March 2022 to face charges relating to reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of exceeding a prescribed maximum limit. Meanwhile, all offenders are expected to appear at various magistrate courts on Tuesday for violation of traffic rules and regulations.

“The conduct by drivers is highly regrettable and therefore a stark reminder that road users must obey the rules and regulations at all times. Many road fatalities that the province continue to record is due to unroadworthy vehicles, unsafe overtaking, overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and general disregard of the rules of the road or road traffic sign amongst others. Road safety is the responsibility of every road user,” said Sello Maremane, Gauteng Traffic Police Spokesperson.

“The Gauteng Traffic Police will continue in its efforts to save lives by continuously engaging in a series of road safety activations and operations in various hazardous locations as part of the Road Safety Education programme during the long weekend,” added Sello Maremane
