Ntsako Patrick Ngobeni (25) who goes by the name Ntsako on Drums (N.O.D) is a young self-taught drummer from Kwa-Thema, the Eastrand. He has taken his passion for drums to greater heights by delving into other untapped gifts that he recently uncovered. Not only has he made a name for himself playing drums, but he has now also explored his other talents, making him an artist, songwriter, and composer.
Ntsako grew up in a household where music was loved. It is a Christian home in which music was a source of comfort in every situation. His mother used to sing when doing basic house chores, and because Ntsako didn’t have the voice to complement the music, he had the beats to go with the songs. It eventually became the norm that whenever someone broke out in song in the house, he would rush to get any kitchenware to bang on using any available kitchen utensils to make a drumming sound suited for the song. Although at this point no one thought much of it, as he was still way too young, this is where the musical seed was planted.
When Ntsako was old enough to comprehend his love for playing drums, he decided to save up money to support his newfound hobby, and passion, by purchasing a drum kit for himself. It was at the age of 13 that he became a first-time drum kit owner, which is quite impressive, as children at that age are still confused about their interests. His first purchase was not just a “toy” but an instrument with which he would fully unleash his true potential.
In the face of not having a formal background in music, he took himself seriously as a professional drummer and seized every opportunity as a stepping stone. Ntsako
“I started playing at church as it was the easiest starting point for me to gain experience. I also took every gig, no matter how big or small. I always practiced daily at home to develop the skills, while also putting myself out there for exposure,” he said.
He started following famous drummers who played locally and abroad and started associating himself with musicians, to water the musical seed that was growing inside of him.
In his music journey, he has had the honour of playing for the great, famous, local, and talented. Many such artists he’s travelled with outside the country as well. He has also shared the stage with great international artists and is known for his cheerful and humble spirit. Ntsako treats all artists with the same respect, it all goes down to business and maintaining professionalism at all costs.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was a gloomy time for many, as jobs were lost, and others were losing loved ones to death. As a surviving artist, he had to think of other creative and meaningful ways to sustain himself and others who were in the industry, which was in decline at that stage. Economic decline, boredom, and frustration pushed him to explore alternative avenues to make money. It was during this depressing phase that his other hidden talents were uncovered, birthing N.O.D. the artist, songwriter, and composer in him. He conceptualised his 7-track album “Uhambo lwempilo (Journey of Life), which consists of the following tracks:
1.Khuzeka ft. Ntando Yamahlubi
2.Kunzima ft. Gugu Kantu
3.Sokalami ft. Darktunez
4.Touch my Soul ft. Darktunez
5. Thatha konke ft. Phindy Sibiya
6. Cinga ft. Dindy
7. Vuka ft. Idols contestant Sia Mzizi
The theme of the album touches on societal ills that address issues of gender-based violence, unemployment, single-parenting, heartbreak, love, and general hardships. The message speaks to people’s daily struggles, which they will resonate with. The album only features local talents as N.O.D wanted to showcase the beautiful gems that are hidden in Ekurhuleni. His first album is in honour of where he comes from, by using his first project as a launching pad for not only himself but also the local artists who deserve the exposure.
The recently released single “Sokalami” has had positive reviews so far, as it tells a heartfelt story that is relatable to many. The single talks about a single mother who has been left by the father of her children, and is wondering when he will be coming back home. The featured artist on this track is Idols Season 16 golden ticket recipient Busisiwe Mthembu also known as ” DarkTunez” from Kwa-Thema. She was also a winner in the Tshepo 1 Million competition for singers that was hosted by Y-FM Radio Station three years ago, where she was invited to perform live on air.
He has pushed himself to be the N.O.D. we see today. He is looking forward to seeing the whole project finally taking flight! He urges everyone to be on the lookout for the release of the full album.
