Smooth Commencement of Matric Exams Despite Absenteeism Concerns

The Gauteng 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams have started well, despite worries about absent students in specific districts.

On Monday, 30 October 2023, the first day included English Home Language Paper 1 and English First Additional Language Paper 1, and overall, the start was trouble-free.

MEC of Education Matome Chiloane stated, “Most candidates followed exam rules as expected.”

“We observed some absenteeism among full-time candidates in our districts. In Tshwane West, a majority attended.

“However, about eight candidates said they were unprepared, two others were absent, and three were hospitalized and couldn’t write,” noted Chiloane.

Earlier, candidates committed to the NSC Examination Code of Conduct.

Chiloane stressed upholding these commitments and urged strict adherence to exam rules to safeguard the exams’ integrity and secure their future.

“All candidates must adhere to the outlined exam regulations. Therefore, unwarranted absenteeism is unacceptable.”

“In Ekurhuleni South, one candidate had a cell phone in the exam centre, breaching rules. In such cases, the candidate might not receive marks for that subject, affecting final results,” Chiloane added.

Chiloane expressed deep sorrow about a tragic incident where a learner from Unity Secondary School allegedly took her life on Sunday, 29 October 2023, a day before the exams.

He urged candidates to seek support from available resources if they face challenges during the exams.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and the school community. Learners should reach out for help using available structures. Our officials are ready to assist. Candidates must honour their exam commitments and avoid absenteeism,” Chiloane emphasized.

For support, learners can contact Childline at 116 or the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) at 0800 567 567, including online platforms.
